Do Compression Stockings Help Varicose Veins?

Updated: Dec 4

varicose veins in legs

Compression stockings, also known as anti-embolism stockings, are often recommended to treat poor blood flow in the legs, such as varicose veins. Varicose veins can cause discomfort and pain, and while they can be treated surgically, compression socks offer a non-invasive, at-home option to help manage the condition.

What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are large, swollen veins that are typically dark purple or blue and appear lumpy or twisted. They often occur on the legs when the small valves in the veins become weak or damaged, preventing blood from flowing smoothly back to the heart. This causes blood to pool, enlarging the veins.

Varicose veins are a result of venous insufficiency, a condition where the valves in the veins of the legs do not function properly. According to the Society for Vascular Surgery, approximately 40% of the U.S. population may experience venous insufficiency at some point in their lives.

What Causes Varicose Veins?

There are several factors that can increase the risk of developing varicose veins, including:

  • Aging

  • Genetics or family history of varicose veins

  • Hormonal changes and pregnancy

  • Prolonged Standing

  • Obesity or excess weight, which puts pressure on veins

What Are Compression Stockings?

Compression stockings are specialized hosiery made of elastic material that applies graduated pressure to the legs. They are tightest at the ankle and gradually loosen higher up the leg, which helps improve blood flow toward the heart.

Medical-grade compression stockings are specifically designed to alleviate symptoms of varicose veins and promote better circulation. They are classified by their level of compression, measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg):

  • Mild Compression: Eases tired, achy legs and supports healthy circulation.

  • Moderate Compression: Ideal for managing mild to moderate varicose veins.

  • Firm or Extra Firm Compression: Recommended for severe vein conditions like leg ulcers or deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

How Do Compression Stockings Help Varicose Veins?

Compression stockings provide relief by improving blood circulation and reducing swelling. By gently squeezing the legs, they help prevent blood from pooling in the veins and may slow the progression of vein disease.

Compression stockings may help:

  • Reduce symptoms such as pain and swelling.

  • Prevent skin damage associated with venous insufficiency.

  • Support vein health to minimize the formation of new varicose veins.

While compression stockings can effectively manage symptoms, they do not treat the underlying vein condition. Surgical intervention is required to permanently remove varicose veins.

How to Measure for Compression Stockings

Proper sizing is essential for comfort and effectiveness. To measure yourself for compression stockings:

  • Measure your ankle circumference at its narrowest point.

  • Measure your calf circumference at its widest point.

  • Measure the length of your leg from heel to knee or thigh, depending on the stocking length.

Are There Risks of Using Compression Stockings?

Compression stockings are generally safe, but improper sizing or use can lead to minor issues, such as:

  • Discomfort due to incorrect sizing or wearing them too long

  • Skin irritation

  • Temporary dents or marks may appear on the skin

To avoid these issues, ensure the stockings are properly fitted, remove them daily, and wash them gently. Always consult a healthcare provider before use, especially if you have skin conditions or nerve damage in the legs.

Compression Stockings May Help Manage Varicose Veins

Compression stockings are an excellent tool for managing varicose veins and improving overall leg health. While they don’t cure varicose veins, they can provide significant relief from pain and swelling, support healthy circulation, and slow the progression of vein disease.

If you’re interested in trying compression stockings, consult with your prescribing healthcare provider to determine the right compression level for your needs. You can also bring this Compression Order Form to your visit to make it easy!
